Investors: The Canadian Government has designed the Immigrant Investor Program in order to provide experienced business people and senior managers with a vehicle that may provide a unique opportunity to immigrate to Canada.   The Immigrant Investor Program was created in 1986 by the Canadian Government to attract successful business immigrants to Canada.  Since its inception, the Immigrant Investor Program has attracted 18,000 immigrants and over CDN$4 billion in direct investments to Canada.  By satisfying certain requirements and investing a pre-determined amount of capital in a qualifying Canadian business project, potential candidates can obtain Canadian permanent residency and even benefit from dual citizenship at a later date.
 As an investor in the Canadian economy, you and your dependents can gain permanent residence in Canada.  You must meet the following immigration selection criteria: 

1.       You must have at least 3 years of management experience.

2.       You must have at least CDN$800,000 in personal net worth accumulated through your own endeavors.

3.       You must deposit CDN$400,000 for 5 years with an approved financial institution at 0% interest.  No further payment is required from the investor.  At the end of the 5 year term, CDN$400,000 is repaid to the investor.  There is a financing option available whereby investors can deposit CDN$120,000 (or approx. US$100,000 at current exchange rates) and financing can be arranged by a major Canadian bank to assist you in completing the balance of the CDN$400,000 investment requirement.  Once the loan is advanced, no monthly payments are required to service the loan and you will not receive any interest or capital return at maturity.  The total cost of this financing package is therefore limited to your initial CDN$120,000 deposit.

4.       The investment is fully guaranteed by the Provincial Government.

5.       You must pass a medical and security evaluation. 

The participating banks in the Immigrant Investor Program are large, well-known Canadian banks with many offices and branches overseas.  They are among the world’s largest banking and financial service organizations.
Interviews under the Investor category take place in 3-4 months and the entire application process takes approximately 18 months.  Once approved, the investor receives an unconditional Visa for Permanent Residence for himself and his dependents.  The investor can work, operate a business, or do nothing.

Canada has a strong economic culture. If you have experience running or investing in businesses, you may qualify to come to Canada as a business immigrant.

The following is a brief description of the basic requirements for obtaining a visa for immigration to Canada under the Entrepreneur and Self-employed category 

Entrepreneurs are defined by the Immigration Act as people who have the ability to establish, purchase, or make a substantial investment in a business in Canada that will create or maintain employment for at least one person in Canada other than the applicant and his or her dependents.  The entrepreneur must actively take part in the management of the business venture.  An applicant must prove that he has a net worth of at least CDN$300,000 and has several recent years of management and ownership experience in operating a business.  The applicant will also have to submit financial records of the previous 5 years of his business such as number of full time employees, total annual sales, annual net income and net assets of the company at year-end.  His business must then pass the test of being a “qualifying business”.

Self-Employed
This category targets , athletics, artisans, artists, craftsman, and farmers. It might be the category for you, if your talents and expertise in your field of work are outstanding and allow you to support yourself.

Self-employed persons need relevant experience of at least 2 years, must have the intention and ability to be self-employed in Canada, and make a significant contribution to specified economic activities in Canada. The experience must lay in cultural activities. athletics, in participation at a world class level in cultural activities and athletics or farm management experience.

Financial assets also should be sufficient enough to guarantee the establishment of the immigrant and his family until the self- employment has been created. Visas issued under the self-employment category are unconditional with no terms and conditions imposed.

You will be required to pay a processing fee to the Canadian government at the time the formal application is filed with the Embassy in the amount of CDN$1,050 for yourself, CDN$550 for your spouse and CDN$150 for each dependent child below the age of 22.

A study permit is needed for all academic, professional, and vocational training courses if the program is NOT completed within 6 months. Major requirements are a letter of acceptance and sufficient financial resources.

Due to the excellent education programs the tuition fees are high. Depending upon the institution and the chosen program the tuition fee for one year could be between ~CAN$6000.00 to CAN$12,000.00. In addition the student should be able to show savings of ~CAN$10,000.00 as financial support for the living expenses in the first year.

If you have High School Diploma, Associates Degree, Bachelors Degree or Masters Degree and you want to continue your education in Canada, you may qualify to come to Canada as an international student.
